The Digicel PNG Foundation is a non-profit organization that distributes and utilizes funds on a charitable basis for the sole purpose of building communities and community spirit in PNG.

The Digicel PNG Foundation strives to ensure that communities are healthy, primarily through the support of community based and driven activities which should embrace social, cultural and particularly educational objectives. The Digicel PNG Foundation was created to work with Government and Non – Governmental organizations which strive to support projects in PNG that cater to educational, social and cultural opportunities that will inspire and build positive energy in its citizens, which will in turn lead to stronger, self sufficient communities.

The foundation was founded in 2008 with a generous donation of K1.3 million, the Digicel Foundation was created from the vision of our Patron, Denis O’ Brien, Chairman and Founder of Digicel.

The unique character of the Digicel PNG Foundation is that its Board is almost entirely comprised of Digicel Staff Members. Digicel employees along with the Foundation assist communities through their time, expertise and leadership. All Digicel staff are encouraged to participate in the Foundation projects. At least 10% of all staff (400+ in PNG) have volunteered to offer up their spare time to work on foundation projects so far so the response has been good as we have only just launched the foundation in PNG 1 month ago.

The first project is well under way with 5 Mobile Learning Centres already completed, and the plan is to the rest of them rolled out by end of March 2009.

As well as the Mobile Learning Centres, the foundation is undertaking a number of projects. The Foundation will fund construction of 6 schools, with 1 project at Barakau school launched in November. The construction of 2 more schools has started, with double classrooms being built in different provinces. The foundation is funding 5 Family Care Centres (for victims of domestic abuse) in general hospitals in 4 different provinces.
